When did you start working as a professional photographer?
When I was little, I used to admire photography. One day, my father gave me a polaroid camera as a gift because I was really curious about photography and he wanted to spark my interest even more. Since then, I’ve always loved photography and I first picked up a camera when I was 20. After my study and training, I started working as a full-time professional photographer in 2008.
You mentioned you had formal training, where was this and how has it impacted your career?
Yes, I had formal training in Mexico City. At that time, I wanted to kill two birds with one stone. Therefore, I used to study marketing on weekdays and had photography training on weekends. It was never easy to manage well the balance between them. In addition, for me, photography is not only just work but my passion that you can’t feel from formal training sessions. So, the training actually didn’t impact me very much.
Which camera do you use for your photo or video shoots?
Currently, I am working with Sony A7 III. Though it doesn’t have the most megapixels or shoot the fastest bursts, it’s easily recommendable for all kinds of photographers and photography. It’s a capable full-frame camera with a well-judged mix of resolution, speed, and features. It’s suitable for photographers working in various photography like me.
What makes a great photo from your point of view and how do you achieve that?
In my opinion, great photos are created in a comfortable zone where my models easily communicate and share their emotions with me. Also, I am never rush because the relaxing atmosphere is the key. Through my many years of experience and interaction with clients, I got to know how to catch a perfect moment for pictures through smooth communication.

Is it challenging to earn a living in this business nowadays, if so why?
Yes, it is definitely challenging these days. As you have already heard, there are a lot of competitions in the photography business. So, I have to promote myself as a skillful professional freelancer and make people convinced to make photoshoots with me. And it’s always not easy.
Share with us a project you’re most proud of? And why?
The project I’m most proud of is ‘Sabores Latinos’. I had an opportunity to take photos of entrepreneur Latinos who live in Melbourne. Their stories and lives fascinated me and I wanted to capture their own identities and characters in the pictures. You can check more on the website of my company ‘Fotografa AU’ that I love!
